A woman is asking an old lover if he is still playing his flute in the village. She has probably left the village while the man has stayed behind. Ever since the poet has left the village, the village has not done well. The village has fallen into disuse; rice fields are no longer being planted and young people have no work as a result.
People have become very political and they belong to different political parties and have different views. As a result, they are no longer united and no longer care for one another or help and support one another. There has been unrest and bloodshed in the village, perhaps because of events related to politics.
The poet’s lover along with the people of the village have not fared well, as the village has been bypassed by development. Thus the poet is wondering if in these bad times in the village, the lover is still playing his flute as in times past.
