Tone of Poem
The poem has a nostalgic, whimsical tone, a longing for a time gone by. There is regret  and a tinge of horror and and puzzlement as to why things have degraded to such a state. It is also a longing for a time of youth, which is contrasted with the present time of ‘old’, the fragrance of flowers and dewdrops and youth contrasted with the ‘sick rice field’. There is also a feeling of disturbance or being upset at the disunity of politics, slaughter, cruelty (merciless) and the pain and suffering (bleeding) that has come to the village.
